The Pet Bed and Breakfast Closing:

December 21, 2001 - October 31, 2011

This is my official announcement to inform everyone that I have decided to close the kennel permanently as of 6pm October 31st, 2011.

Over the past 2 weeks, I've done my best to contact and notify everyone that has already booked their reservations with me for the upcoming Holiday Season and beyond.

The reaction from most people is that of shock and disappointment.  As much as I've really enjoyed getting to know all of you, and our little furry friends, I do feel that it's time for me to step back, take a nice long break from my 7day/365 day/year lifestyle, of the past ten years, and allow myself the time and space to re-assess my interests, passions and hopes for my future, once again.

I know that I am a very different person now, after all of my experiences and challenges with running my kennel and it's important to me, that I give myself the chance to get to know the person that I've become because, quite honestly, I haven't had the luxury or chance or time to explore this question, while I've been so busy with the business.

Everyone is asking me, 'What's next?'  I have no idea right now.  I've had business' for 20+ years, so I could imagine starting another one, but who knows what's ahead?!  I don't even want to allow myself to entertain that question, until I've taken the Winter or longer off, from having to think, remember, organize, and generally 'do'.  I'm looking forward to taking a trip or 2 this winter, learning to ski and probably snowboard, have time to create beautiful food, enjoy my woodstove and, of course, my own adorable kitties, who have been so very generous and patient with me, the last 10 years.  It's finally time to put them first... ahead of the endless needs and responsibity of the business and the 100's of other cats, for a change.  They deserve it and I really feel that I owe them that.  I'm looking forward to it.

So many people are asking why I don't sell the business.  The decision to close took a long time to ferment but since I committed to my decision, I want to move on as quickly as possible.

It has been an interesting decade.  Opening 3 months after September 11, 2001, didn't bode well for a business that relies heavily on people travelling, but it didn't slow me or the business down.   I've met fascinating people, beautiful people, with a passion for life, living, and their animals.  I consider myself very lucky to have had this experience.  I've learned so much from my customers, the animals, and my employees since the beginning.  As demanding as this business and lifestyle has been on me, for ten years, I'm greatful to have lived it and to have the luxury to close it properly, so that I can retain my good thoughts and great memories in regards to the B&B.

It's never easy to say good-bye and it's never going to be a 'good time' to close this business.  I thank you all once again, from the bottom of my heart, for your kindness and generosity and friendship.  It has been an honour and a privilege to be of service to you for ten years.  I hope to run into many of you in the months and years ahead.

Sincerely,

Melanie Walker
