Vaccination Requirements
Our New Policy On Admission Requirements: Effective Immediately, for all bookings taken after July 23rd, 2009
To ensure that our kennel is safe and clean for each of our furry guests, we are now requiring that ALL CATS, indoor & outdoor, which stay at the Pet Bed and Breakfast, have the following veterinarian administered treatments and vaccines in force:
- FVRCP (Feline Vaccine Rhino Calici Panluek) - good for one year only
- Feline Rabies Vaccine - either the one year or 3 year, proof of manufacturer recorded
- Feline Lukemia Vaccine - good for one year only
- We now require that all cats have a quality flea treatment in force such as Advantage or Revolution. These are veterinarian products. These products are usually sold as singles, 3, 6 or12 to a box. They are liquid ointments. Be sure to specify, to the vet, that you require the formula that is effective for fleas & parasites. Only one individual tube is necessary prior to each visit (within 48 hours). One tube is squeezed and emptied, into the cat's fur, between the back shoulder blades. Proof of payment/purchase required, as well as the empty plastic treatment container that proves that the product was, in fact, applied. We do not accept flea collars on cats.
- We require a copy of current vaccination records for each visit. It is easiest to leave your
vaccination certificates with your cat carriers, at all times, so as to not forget to bring them in.
OR, in lieu of the Advantage product/ Revolution product, that is effective for both, fleas & parasites:
- We will accept proof of a veterinarian administered oral de-worming treatment or a veterinarian performed fecal exam showing a negative result, WITHIN THE WEEK PRIOR TO ENTERING our kennel, As Well As, A veterinarian quality flea treatment.
Flea Treatments and Fecal Exams/De-worming , need to be performed PRIOR TO EACH VISIT at the Pet Bed and Breakfast.
Since the start of the Pet B&B, in 2001, I have highly recommended that all cats, even indoor cats, be given the Feline Lukemia vaccine. Now, I have made it mandatory for all cats to have it because I feel that all cats, indoor & outdoor, share the same risks here. Ottawans are very good at adopting cats from our various animal rescue networks & the Ottawa Humane Society. Most people are falsely under the impression that these rescue groups have the funds to perform thorough blood testing on all of the animals that they care for. That simply isn't the case. These groups do not have the funds to do routine blood testing of their animals, to check for the Feline Lukemia virus.
Many people aren't aware of the seriousness of the Feline Lukemia virus. It won't just make your cat sick or uncomfortable. It will certainly kill the animal. Feline Lukemia is a virus that can be transmitted through saliva. Cats are in a group boarding situation, at my kennel. They share food and water bowls. They also engage in playful wrestling and will often groom each other, even unrelated cats. With these things in mind, I'm sure that you can understand why I have made it mandatory.
We have never had an outbreak of fleas or parasites at my kennel. I have decided that the enforcement of a flea & parasite treatment, for all cats, is long overdue. I do not want any cat unknowingly, bringing anything like this to the other cats. And, I certainly don't want any cats going home with anything like this either. I am enforcing this policy as a strictly preventative measure. I'm sure that everyone will agree, that in my group boarding environment, special precautions need to be taken, versus a caged or home sitting option. I want Cats to be Cats at my kennel. Safe, happy, healthy cats. I want the same thing for them, once they return home too.
We are dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment for all of our feline guests. PLEASE BE AWARE, that if ALL of these conditions are not met and/or up-to-date, for each visit, WE WILL REFUSE YOUR CATS, until such time, that they are met.
My only interest is in keeping our animals and my kennel as safe as possible for each and every cat that we care for. We appreciate your understanding and co-operation, as well as your vets co-operation. The Pet Bed and Breakfast is the only Cageless Cat Boarding Facility of it's kind, in the Greater Ottawa Region.
It is also the funnest!! Together, we can keep it that way for all cats!
Thank you, Melanie Walker & staff.
